The Lustleigh Music Society presents…
Divertimento String Quartet…
Once again it is great to welcome the Divertimento String Quartet with their interesting programme of 3 works. The concert opens with the delightful Haydn quartet Op.20 No.6. This was actually the 2nd to be written in this group of 6 quartets and his 24th of his total of nearly 70. It has the standard 4 movement form but in the finale Haydn shows off his technical skill with a fugal movement. This Op.20 set is a milestone in musical history and helped to earn Haydn the title of ‘The father of the String Quartet’.
Divertimento always presents us with a more unusual piece in their programmes. In this concert we have the 2 pieces for String Quartet by Aaron Copland. He is known mainly for his orchestral works particularly the ballets Billy the Kid and Rodeo where he portrays the great outdoors of the American landscape. He is also widely known for his Fanfare for the Common Man. The 2 Pieces for String Quartet are his only essays in the medium consisting of a slow intense piece followed by a lively one with irregular rhythmic patterns.
The main work is the first of the 3 string quartets by Brahms. This is much influenced by Beethoven whose mantle he inherited in the line of great German composers. It is one of his great romantic works and in enlarged form follows the standard 4 movement pattern.
Please note that the concert is on SUNDAY April 19th in Lustleigh Village Hall at 3.00pm. Adult tickets ordered in advance from me or purchased at the Dairy are £13 and on the door £15. Students and children free.
