The talk will include Napoleon’s surrender\, his journey from Rochefort on board HMS Bellerophon\, the excitement\, controversy and tensions of his stay in the ship just off Plymouth\, and his departure into exile on St Helena. DESCRIPTION:Talk on the “Aerial Atlas of Ancient Britain” – by DAVID ABRAM – Photographer \nMonday Oct 24th \n7.30pm \nCome to Lustleigh Village Hall for an evening of inspirational images from author and photographer\, David R Abram. \nDavid has spent the past five years capturing views of Britain’s most extraordinary prehistoric sites from above in rare\, sunrise light using drones and telescopic poles. Whether Neolithic tombs in Orkney\, Bronze Age ceremonial sites in Snowdonia or the enigmatic stone monuments erected by our ancestors on Dartmoor\, his images reveal forms invisible at ground level\, and intriguing connections between the monuments and their varied landscapes. \nLively and rich with archaeological insight\, David’s talk will cherry pick highlights from his new book\, the Aerial Atlas of Ancient Britain (just published by Thames & Hudson\, with a Foreword by Professor Alice Roberts)\, which charts the arc of British prehistory from the end of the Ice Age to the arrival of the Romans. \nThis is a rare opportunity to see his most acclaimed work projected at scale – an experience that is sure to inspire visits to prehistoric sites in the area you already know\, and many you don’t! SUMMARY:The Lustleigh Music Society presents - Divertimento String Quartet Concert
DESCRIPTION:Divertimento Concert \nUnless the covid situation deteriorates badly we will go ahead with our next planned Divertimento String Quartet concert.  Masks and Distancing will be observed and so we should all be able to keep safe. \nThe main work in the programme is the String Quartet No.2 in G minor by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). He is one of the giants of Scandinavian music and his 6 symphonies are all great works and in the mainstream of the symphonic repertoire. His string quartets are relatively early works in his output. There is an unnumbered quartet in D minor from 1882 unpublished in his lifetime.  Next comes the G minor quartet completed in 1888 but not performed until 10 years later and published in 1900 and in a revised edition that became the 2nd of the 4 quartets to be published. \nIt is in 4 movements: Allegro energico/Andante amoroso/ Scherzo: Allegro molto/ Finale: Allegro inquieto.  There is a certain quirkiness in his writing often with unexpected modulations which is particularly discernable in the Scherzo\, but overall\, the lasting impression is that it is an attractive\, lyrical and tuneful work. \nThe supporting pieces in the programme are Dowland (Flow my Tears)\, Mathew Locke (Suite in D minor) and Caroline Shaw (Entr’acte). \nLustleigh Village Hall\, Sunday  Feb.20th  at 3.00pm  Adults £15.00  Students and children Free. Tickets at the Dairy or On the Door. \nA further concert is being planned for Saturday April 30th with an augmented Divertimento to play sextets by Spohr and Brahms.
