DESCRIPTION:Talk on the “Aerial Atlas of Ancient Britain” – by DAVID ABRAM – Photographer \nMonday Oct 24th \n7.30pm \nCome to Lustleigh Village Hall for an evening of inspirational images from author and photographer\, David R Abram. \nDavid has spent the past five years capturing views of Britain’s most extraordinary prehistoric sites from above in rare\, sunrise light using drones and telescopic poles. Whether Neolithic tombs in Orkney\, Bronze Age ceremonial sites in Snowdonia or the enigmatic stone monuments erected by our ancestors on Dartmoor\, his images reveal forms invisible at ground level\, and intriguing connections between the monuments and their varied landscapes. \nLively and rich with archaeological insight\, David’s talk will cherry pick highlights from his new book\, the Aerial Atlas of Ancient Britain (just published by Thames & Hudson\, with a Foreword by Professor Alice Roberts)\, which charts the arc of British prehistory from the end of the Ice Age to the arrival of the Romans. \nThis is a rare opportunity to see his most acclaimed work projected at scale – an experience that is sure to inspire visits to prehistoric sites in the area you already know\, and many you don’t! DESCRIPTION:  \nDivertimento Concert \nThe next Divertimento String Quartet Concert in the Village Hall takes place on Sunday October16th at 3.00pm. The programme has 3 works: \nBoccherini (1743-1805)             Quartet Op 2. No.1 in C minor. \nErwin Schulhoff (1894-1942)    Five Pieces 1923/4. \nBeethoven (1770-1827)            Quartet No.9.  Op.59. No.3 in C minor (known as the 3rd Razumovsky Quartet). \nAndrew\, the Divertimento Viola player\,  has contributed the following: \nWhat’s in a dedication? A huge amount\, certainly in the case of the pieces we are performing.   Luigi Boccherini’s Quartet is dedicated to  ”all true music lovers and connoisseurs of music”.  Erwin Schulhoff dedicated his 5 Pieces to the French composer Darius Milhaud and Beethoven’s work is the 3rd of 3 Quartets dedicated to the Russian patron Count Razumovsky.   All three pieces are centered around the crucial note C starting in dramatic C minor in Boccherini\,  through a fascinating kaleidoscope of the Schulhoff treatment  and finishing with the brilliance of Beethoven’s C major finale. \nI am sure we will\, as usual\, be treated to a wonderful and varied concert of familiar and unfamiliar music performed by this superb quartet. \nTickets\, as usual\, available in the Dairy or On the door:   Adults £15 (plus a kindly optional donation to help cover our rising costs if you would like to give us further support)  and students/children Free. \n—\nWill Carnell T: 01647 277 270

DESCRIPTION:Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training. \nBasic life support and CPR skills training with Sarah Brewer and Keith Edwards community training officer for South West Ambulance. \nA two hour training session on Monday 9th May starting at 7pm. \nA Brief History and How to Book: \nIn 2015 we held some very popular and well received sessions on basic life support and CPR training in the Village Hall. \nThis resulted in the installation of the village defibrillator sited at the Village Hall\, by kind agreement of the Village Hall Management Committee and kindly sponsored by the Lustleigh Association Of Volunteer Drivers\, LADS. \nThere has been recent discussion on the LADS committee about arranging further CPR training sessions. \nThe sudden collapse of a relative friend or neighbour is difficult to cope with but having the confidence to assess\, call for help and administer basic life support whilst waiting for emergency services to arrive can be a life saver. \nAlthough many of us may have these skills they soon become rusty and it is important to practice them and keep up to date. \nSarah Brewer and Keith Edwards the community training officer for South West Ambulance are planning a series of training sessions which we hope to arrange in April. \nWe will be holding 2 hour sessions for 12 people in the village hall that will cover basic life support\, recognition of stroke and other medical emergencies. \nThe sessions will be free but we suggest a contribution to a charity of your choice. \nPlease contact me if you would like to attend one of these sessions and we will confirm dates as soon as we can. Spectacles include maypole dancing by the children of the village\, a brass band playing and a display of Morris dancing. Further distractions to keep visitors occupied include stalls\, games\, a raffle\, face painting\, and traditional Devon cream teas. \nThe fun begins at 1pm. \nThe Parade starts at 2:00pm \nAn excerpt from ‘Legendary Dartmoor’: \nToday\, probably the most famous May Queen celebrations can be found at Lustleigh. Here the May Day traditions had lapsed until in 1905 Cecil Torr revived them. They have been held on the first Saturday in May ever since and initially the ‘crowning’ took place on a hillside above Wreyland. Here there is a huge granite boulder where the ceremony took place\, the boulder has inscribed upon it the names of all the May Queens up to 1954. Then the celebrations were moved to the Town Orchard where the Queen’s throne was erected on a rock. Like its predecessor this rock has the names of the all the May Queens inscribed on it from 1954 to 2000\, the rock is known as the May Day Rock. In the May of 2000 a new throne was unveiled at the May Day celebrations. The throne was cut from granite from the nearby Blackingstone Quarry\, it was designed by Doug Cooper and carved by Warren Pappas\, on it is inscribed ‘MM’. The crowning celebration begins early in the morning when the ladies of the village make a grand canopy of flowers. Then early in the afternoon the Queen is escorted by four bearers who carry the canopy and a procession is led around the village. The Queen’s crown of fresh flowers is carried alongside the retinue. The procession then stops at the church steps where the queen is blessed by the rector and the village children sing songs. The May Queen is then escorted to ‘The Orchard’ where she is crowned on the May Day Rock and then the villagers dance around the May-pole. DESCRIPTION:The next Divertimento concert is on Saturday April 30th at 3.00pm.\nThe Quartet are adding 2 players (Viola and Cello) in order to play 2 Sextets by Spohr and Brahms. Brahms (1833-1897) will be a familiar composer to most of you but Spohr (1784-1859) rather less so. As a contemporary of Beethoven he was a very successful and popular composer in his time but by the middle of the 20th century he was almost forgotten. His name was kept alive by two things. His Nonet was a great piece that survived in chamber music circles and he had a special mention in one of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas – The Mikado. The Mikado sings about his ‘Object all sublime – to make the punishment fit the crime!’  He mentions\, ‘the Music Hall singer who attends a series of masses and fugues and ops\, shall be made to listen to Spohr and Beethoven and classical sundry pops!’ Anyhow Louis Spohr was a highly prolific German composer in many genres but only wrote one string sextet (op.140 in C)\, one of the first to be written in this genre when he was in his early 60s.  Written in the revolutionary year of 1848 he attached a note to his catalogue of compositions\, ‘Written in March and April at the time of the glorious revolution of the peoples for the liberty\, unity and grandeur of Germany.  The sextet is written in the standard classical form that evolved in the String Quartet. There are 4 movements:   1. Allegro moderato. 2. Larghetto.  3. Scherzo moderato.  4. Presto\, moderato\, presto. \nThe string sextet was not a genre that attracted many composers and the two written by Brahms were a valuable addition to the repertoire. The first of these (in Bb op.18)\, written in 1860\, is a splendid youthful work. There are the standard 4 movements:  1. Allegro moderato. From the opening Cello melody the warmth and richness of the sound texture is apparent.  2. Andante moderato. 6 variations on a strong folk-like theme.  3. Allegro mollto.  A brief but cheerful Scherzo.  4. Rondo poco allegretto e grazioso. A charming and gentle finale. \nThe reduction in concert playing opportunities due to the pandemic and cost of living increases generally have hit musicians hard. We feel the need to support their work so that we can continue to benefit from their high quality live music making.  We do not want to hike prices so that it puts concerts out of reach for some people and families so we are suggesting that we continue with our £15 adult ticket price but would welcome any additional donation that some of us feel they would like to make.  Also please encourage friends and others to attend our concerts to boost numbers and support our wonderful live music.
