SUMMARY:Lustleigh May Day Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:Lustleigh May Day Celebrations.\nIf you’re looking for a traditional English May Day\, you probably couldn’t beat Lustleigh’s celebrations on Saturday\, May 4th 2024. Spectacles include maypole dancing by the children of the village\, a brass band playing and a display of Morris dancing. The highlight will be a procession through the pretty village with the May Queen being crowned in the village orchard. Further distractions to keep visitors occupied include stalls\, games\, a raffle\, face painting\, and traditional Devon cream teas. \nThe fun begins at 1pm. \nThe Parade starts at 2:00pm. \nAn excerpt from ‘Legendary Dartmoor’: \nToday\, probably the most famous May Queen celebrations can be found at Lustleigh. Here the May Day traditions had lapsed until in 1905 Cecil Torr revived them. They have been held on the first Saturday in May ever since and initially the ‘crowning’ took place on a hillside above Wreyland. Here there is a huge granite boulder where the ceremony took place\, the boulder has inscribed upon it the names of all the May Queens up to 1954. Then the celebrations were moved to the Town Orchard where the Queen’s throne was erected on a rock. Like its predecessor this rock has the names of the all the May Queens inscribed on it from 1954 to 2000\, the rock is known as the May Day Rock. In the May of 2000 a new throne was unveiled at the May Day celebrations. The throne was cut from granite from the nearby Blackingstone Quarry\, it was designed by Doug Cooper and carved by Warren Pappas\, on it is inscribed ‘MM’. The crowning celebration begins early in the morning when the ladies of the village make a grand canopy of flowers. Then early in the afternoon the Queen is escorted by four bearers who carry the canopy and a procession is led around the village. The Queen’s crown of fresh flowers is carried alongside the retinue. The procession then stops at the church steps where the queen is blessed by the rector and the village children sing songs. The May Queen is then escorted to ‘The Orchard’ where she is crowned on the May Day Rock and then the villagers dance around the May-pole. During the afternoon teas are served\, brass bands play and Morris Dancers ‘clog’ their jigs and dances. \nTo read more of the History of Lustleigh May Day and see some historical photographs visit: \nLustleigh May Day – A History \n \n

It is played with a long plectrum called a risha in Arabic. \nThe strings of the Hurdy-gurdy are sounded by turning a rosined wheel. A set of keys changes the pitches on the melody strings.  It dates as far back as the 10th century. \nThe Nyckelharpa (meaning “keyed fiddle”) is a bowed instrument and is the national instrument of Sweden.  It dates back to the 14thcentury. \nThe Persian Santur has its ancient origins in Mesopotamia and is a type of hammed dulcimer with a range of about three octaves.  It is played with two mezrab\, which are feather-light mallets. \nThe Cittern is developed from the medieval citole.  It is a pear-shaped and fretted with four courses of paired strings. \nThe tambura is also a fretted instrument dating back to the 3rdmillennium B.C. It has a long neck\, chromatic frets and a carved bowl-like body.  Similar instruments are dotted throughout the Balkans and Middle East. \n

SUMMARY:Divertimento Concert - Sunday October 16th at 3.00pm
DESCRIPTION:  \nDivertimento Concert \nThe next Divertimento String Quartet Concert in the Village Hall takes place on Sunday October16th at 3.00pm. The programme has 3 works: \nBoccherini (1743-1805)             Quartet Op 2. No.1 in C minor. \nErwin Schulhoff (1894-1942)    Five Pieces 1923/4. \nBeethoven (1770-1827)            Quartet No.9.  Op.59. No.3 in C minor (known as the 3rd Razumovsky Quartet). \nAndrew\, the Divertimento Viola player\,  has contributed the following: \nWhat’s in a dedication? A huge amount\, certainly in the case of the pieces we are performing.   Luigi Boccherini’s Quartet is dedicated to  ”all true music lovers and connoisseurs of music”.  Erwin Schulhoff dedicated his 5 Pieces to the French composer Darius Milhaud and Beethoven’s work is the 3rd of 3 Quartets dedicated to the Russian patron Count Razumovsky.   All three pieces are centered around the crucial note C starting in dramatic C minor in Boccherini\,  through a fascinating kaleidoscope of the Schulhoff treatment  and finishing with the brilliance of Beethoven’s C major finale. \nI am sure we will\, as usual\, be treated to a wonderful and varied concert of familiar and unfamiliar music performed by this superb quartet. \nTickets\, as usual\, available in the Dairy or On the door:   Adults £15 (plus a kindly optional donation to help cover our rising costs if you would like to give us further support)  and students/children Free. \n—\nWill Carnell T: 01647 277 270

SUMMARY:The Lustleigh Music Society presents - Divertimento String Quartet Concert
DESCRIPTION:Divertimento Concert \nUnless the covid situation deteriorates badly we will go ahead with our next planned Divertimento String Quartet concert.  Masks and Distancing will be observed and so we should all be able to keep safe. \nThe main work in the programme is the String Quartet No.2 in G minor by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). He is one of the giants of Scandinavian music and his 6 symphonies are all great works and in the mainstream of the symphonic repertoire. His string quartets are relatively early works in his output. There is an unnumbered quartet in D minor from 1882 unpublished in his lifetime.  Next comes the G minor quartet completed in 1888 but not performed until 10 years later and published in 1900 and in a revised edition that became the 2nd of the 4 quartets to be published. \nIt is in 4 movements: Allegro energico/Andante amoroso/ Scherzo: Allegro molto/ Finale: Allegro inquieto.  There is a certain quirkiness in his writing often with unexpected modulations which is particularly discernable in the Scherzo\, but overall\, the lasting impression is that it is an attractive\, lyrical and tuneful work. \nThe supporting pieces in the programme are Dowland (Flow my Tears)\, Mathew Locke (Suite in D minor) and Caroline Shaw (Entr’acte). \nLustleigh Village Hall\, Sunday  Feb.20th  at 3.00pm  Adults £15.00  Students and children Free. Tickets at the Dairy or On the Door. \nA further concert is being planned for Saturday April 30th with an augmented Divertimento to play sextets by Spohr and Brahms.
