Lustleigh Society…THE WELLIED SLEUTH DIGS THE DIRT ON DARTMOOR.
January 23 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm
“THE WELLIED SLEUTH DIGS THE DIRT ON DARTMOOR”.
An illustrated talk by TIM HARROD.
Long memories in Lustleigh will recall a venerable, yet vagabond PhD in wellies and an ancient VW, apparently aimlessly quartering Lustleigh’s landscape in all weathers. But there was a purpose and eventually an award winning and colourful outcome.
Tim Harrod worked with the Soil Survey of England & Wales from 1965 until 1987 when it was disbanded by Michael Joplin, Minister of Agriculture & Fisheries, who considered it ‘an expensive nonsense’. Upon retirement in 2001 Tim took up the challenge of completing the unfinished work of the Soil Survey in Devon, by single-handedly mapping the soils of nearly 50,000 acres of ground in the Chagford, Moretonhampstead and Lustleigh area of Dartmoor, ranging from the deep peat of the high moor to a wide variety of enclosed land.
His achievement and his contribution to the understanding of the county’s environment is second to none, and is reminiscent of some of the great pioneer surveys of our landscape in the 18th century.
The meeting is open to everyone and is a chance to join the Lustleigh Society or to renew your membership. Refreshments from 7.00 p.m.
