Lionel Bennett’s Lustleigh Nature Diary: comparing nature records from 100 years ago.
February’s talk will have wide appeal to those interested in climate change and life in Lustleigh in the early 20th Century.
The speakers are Dr Shaun Russell Director of the Wales Environment Hub at Bangor University, and Viv Brooks (Lionel Bennett’s granddaughter), and her husband, Colin.
Whilst browsing in a Totnes second-hand bookshop Dr Russell came across a diary belonging to Lionel Bennett. The diary contained nature observations taken between 1915 and 1965 in Lustleigh while Bennett was living at Kemerton and Trapstile. The diary sparked Shaun’s interest and he started investigating both Bennett’s nature records and his life in the village.
Shaun returned to Lustleigh in October 2018 to compare his contemporary observations of nature with Lionel’s historic record. His presentation will explore those comparisons. His observations will be supplemented by background information on the Bennett family from Viv and Colin, including the gifting of The Orchard to the village by the Bennetts in 1965.
Meetings are held in the Lustleigh Village Hall.
