Another exciting musical event is the visit of the Italian opera company Gli Amici di Fritz. It is a small touring group led by the soprano Claudia Alverez Calderon with Fulvio Bussano (baritone) and musicians Alex Wilson (piano) and Carina Vince (violin). The director is Ruth Anne Henderson.
They are performing La Serva Padrona by Giovanni Pergolesi (1710- 1736)
Pergolesi was a very talented composer who wrote an incredible amount of music in his very short life. He wrote a lot of church music including a famous Stabat Mater and several operas and much instrumental music. The attractiveness of his melodic invention inspired the great Russian composer Stravinsky to write a ballet Pulcinella reharmonising and orchestrating a number of Pergolesi’s melodies.
La Serva Padrona is and Opera Buffa which mean a light, often comic opera in contrast to the larger, serious grand operas. As in the case of La Serva Padrona it was first performed, by way of relief, between the acts of a serious opera and immediately gained great popularity. The plot is a traditional version of the maidservant who outwits and eventually marries the wealthy master.
The opera will be sung in Italian and although we do not have surtitles all will be made clear!
The doors will open at 7.00pm and there is a bar.
