LUSTLEIGH DRAMA GROUP
MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN
BY BERTOLT BRECHT
In a modern version by David Hare
Written with compassion, wisdom and wry humour, ‘Mother Courage’ is regarded as a 20th Century masterpiece, but its universal themes and characters make it very much a play for today. The title character struggles with the irreconcilable aims of making money and keeping her children alive during the nightmare of an endless war. She is determined, clever and clear-sighted, but can she and her family survive?
The company have chosen to begin their production in a refugee camp somewhere in Europe in the very near future when the inmates are preparing to pass the time by putting on a play. The audience will be ‘permitted’ to enter the camp and watch from three sides of the action as Mother Courage and her cart laden with goods travels across the battlefields.
Led by a strong cast, this is a compelling piece of drama, full of action, original music and lively characters – not to be missed!
